"Right now every virus scanner has to reinvent the wheel in regards to integration with applications, and whether or not any given app gets such security and how it's implemented is entirely up to the AV developers.
PackageKit allows the creation of package management software that is backend agnostic, and Phonon allows the same thing for multimedia. Why not have something similar for virus scanning, so that any app can integrate virus scanning into itself? Apps on the Ubuntu desktop that could benefit from this include Evolution, Firefox, and Synaptic.
Doing this would be good preparation for the future, since we don't know if and when viruses would start to target the free desktops, and it will also help protect our friends and family who still use Windows."
