ustream failure

Bad news to report: for whatever reason, the UStream recording only included the last 10 minutes or so of the show. It shows the correct offset (56 minutes) where it starts, but the first 56 minutes? Not to be found.

Very, very disappointing. Only the 160-some-odd people who ended up tuning in live got to see it, which is a small % of the usual audience who tune in for the recorded shows afterwards.

I'm going to be looking into alternatives to UStream more aggressively this week due to this latest screw up. I have kdenlive freshly installed from the SVN and will be seeing if that might be the doorway to a reasonable alternative.

I'll keep you posted.

Bummer.

All I can say now is that I'm glad I decided to show up on the actual live show. Good luck for finding the alternative solution.

it seems to me like what you are trying to do is more or less equivalent to somebody trying out a plane for the first time fully loaded with passengers ..

i know this is a blog and it works best in an informal fashion but ..trying stuff out for the first time infront of an audience doesnt look good to you and to what you represent ..

that said,i think what you are trying to do is great for kde ..looking forward to next week ..

... and there is no way for us (which were not able to follow the live session) to know anything about what you said?
Maybe just a summary, because a couple of items would have been of a great interest, at least IMHO, such as the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit or the MySQL thing...

wtf? This is an awesome offer to get to know more about KDE development. It is, as you write, highly informal and the first attempt at doing this. It is not a president's address to the nation.

@Aaron:
Sorry to hear that you lost the fruit of your efforts. I would have liked to watch it. And who knows, maybe this error will lead to a free solution... :)

mutlu

@mhogomchungu: the alternative is that i don't do anything at all. which would you prefer?

and seeing as this was a ustream screw up your comment is a little misdirected. they are the proprietary, commercial solution after all. ;P

Would it be easier to allow the ustream site to serve the live session viewers, but record the screen contents and post them for later viewers of torrent?

Unless there is something that Ustream provides in terms of interactivity between users - how about just uploading the presentation to a YouTube type website?

Its not live, but at least they will host the media file for you. And it helps out people that can't get access to download via bit torrent.

What a shame. You should lokk at Mogulus some shows I watch use Mogulus for live broadcast and then they make the show available in blip.tv.

@aseigo: You don't have the broadcast captured on your own machine at all? There will be no torrent? Ustream lost the only copy? And what is this 'cloud computing' they speak of?

Maybe flumotion server and cortado could be of use?

bradh said...

Ah, that worked, so I'm willing to write more :-)

Would it be worth getting a flumotion server (and the cortado java web applet thingy) set up on a KDE server?

It would probably require more support on the client side (probably), but we would be using a Free Software solution (http://www.flumotion.net/) and there could be some value to other KDE contributors interested in producing webcasts.

Possibly some liaison with the Fluendo team would be useful here, in terms of getting things set up, and perhaps future work on integration.

@Jean: "Would it be easier to allow the ustream site to serve the live session viewers, but record the screen contents and post them for later viewers of torrent?"

that's a possibility, though not one that is likely work overly well, if at all (i don't know how something like recordmydesktop and the flash audio and video input they use would work together?). it would certainly be very fiddly, and error prone though.

@Steve: "Unless there is something that Ustream provides in terms of interactivity between users"

the interactivity between the viewers and myself is a critical component to the show.

it makes it more interesting for everyone.

@sAra: i'll check out Mogulus. thanks.

@bradh: the problem with the FOSS options right now is that they all require a lot of, as you put it, "support on the client side". i really don't have the time to fiddle and patch things together. =/

@aseigo: Maybe you could try to contact the people behind drupal dojo. This is a website where they have live screencasts to teach people about the inner workings of drupal.

The only difference with the ustream shows you currently do (which are great btw.) is that they usually only show what's on their screen and not really the person that is talking. Although I have seen a few screencasts with webcam parts.

Their drupal group website is:
http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-dojo

The official website is:
http://drupaldojo.com
