When we returned, I glanced at my desktop and saw this:

I had been running xrestop and forgot to stop it before leaving on our walk. Apparently it has quite the consistent and recognizable pattern to its work load. It made me think of a heart monitor, granted with a pretty odd heart on the other end of it. ;)
That graph is one of the five components in the system monitor Plasmoid that will be part of the 4.2 release. I've seen some HOWTO articles on the net recently about how you can set up other system monitoring widgets on your desktop and have marveled at the complexity of them. Back in the day all the cool kids used to use gkrellm (and I'm sure many still do) which is pretty dang easy to set up if I recall correctly, and Plasma's system monitor is just point-and-click to set up. It doesn't even have a config dialog. (Yet? ;)
