rambling forward to 4.0

warning: i'm not going to use the shift key in this blog entry. i just can't bring myself to do so; it's just not the day for it. ;)

today we have a meeting on irc about panels (what many people mistakenly refer to as "the taskbar", which is like referring to beavers as "the rodent") for plasma. we'll have both developers and artists there, so hopefully it will go well. i'll blog about the results of that meeting this evening after it's all over.

btw, every time i read a "i logged into kde 4.0 today and now i'm going to go on and on about plasma..." blog or email (i get several a day; think about what that must be doing to my soul) i die a little inside. it's not like they are saying anything i don't know, let alone say anything about the positive things happening (thank-you A. Pakulat and liquidat for bucking that trend =).

so when i read about korganizer on Cornelius' blog or avogadro and kalzium on Marcus' blog it makes me smile and cheer up a bit.

as for webkit vs khtml: it's a moot point because the market will decide. there will be two options and they will be used in proportion to how each aligns itself with the users of kde. for me personally that means having a light weight component that works perfectly on QGraphicsView. i already have that in QtWebKit. you do the math.

That's allway like that, those who complain are louder than those who are happy. So, just do the math, if 10 guys are complaining, there is probably 100 guys who are happy and just think that there is no need to tell it ! On a side note, I thought the number of grumpy guys was decreasing, at least that's the observation based strictly on the dot comments !

Been looking for a place to say this with out success so I'll ramble here.

KDE4 is going to be awesome! Compiled it from source yesterday om my Gentoo/VMWare partition. With my "Ignore bugs" glasses on I must say I'm stunned! The possibilities I see are just thrilling. Small applets giving me detailed technical information about my desktop (I'm a sysadmin...) I can imagine how this can, in time, evolve to cover servers on the server room. The pure beauty of the Oxygen icons will attract more people to try out KDE, and subsequent *NIX (Looks ARE important).

Things start to look much more polished and user friendly now than the KDE3 series. The possibilities with Solid, Phonon and Plasma... damn! I just can not wait till another year have passed and we can all see the fruits of the hard work people are doing now. Thanks to you all KDE developers!

On a more personal note to Aaron. You once wrote the words "Think and do". You have no idea how much those words have helped me changing my life to the better :) Thanks!

*Walking up on the stands to continue cheering for the KDE dudes and dudettes*

You know us weak people...
We critizise, but on the other hand we know it's wrong doing it, but can't help it. We all know it's going to be great. Might not be in 4.0, but 4.1+

hi there, just wanted to tell you what great work you did on plasma. Sure, it has it's problems, but i compile nearly daily to check out the progress, and it gets better and better! actualy, the only thing left is the panel, then the kde4 desktop is ready to be used :-)

keep up the good work

Aaron, don't bother with people that only criticise others' work. Your contribution is going to be so very important to so many other people who appreciate it and eagerly await.

Thanks for all the things you do for us KDE users!

I just finished testing out the latest KDE4 Live CD (thanks, OpenSuse guys!) and was surprised by lots of little niceties. Things seem to be progressing rapidly. The Games and Edu stuff is awesome (I spent like 20 minutes playing with KTouch - who knew it was looking so good these days?!). KOffice, while obviously still buggy, looks beautiful - I love the toolbar layout. PIM is coming together. Plasma is making good progress. Oxygen is getting better every day. Overall, there's way more positive than negative by a long shot.

Hope that gives your soul a big hug, Aaron.

I am happy :-)

As Cyrille suggested, you always get an unrepresentative number of complaints. Frankly, what you guys do is great.

You have a keyboard where you can type a "(" or ")" without the shift key?

I want one of those!

I'm pretty confident in the release. Currently I'm playing a bit with SVN builds I do every now and then, and I'm really impressed.

Hi Aaron,

don't worry about complainings too much. As said before, people who complain always tend to shout out loud, and others that are happy don't.

I'm not a developer, but what can you expect from a software that is written (allmost) completly new and still under heavy development? Even I know that at this time there must be bugs, missing features, problems, and so on...

So what? That's what development is for, isn't it?

Maybe it's better to not read so much blogs and comments from people "that know all about KDE4" and actually know ... nothing?

So cheer up and don't care to much about those comments.

Regards,

Ralf

thanks for your hard work on plasma aaron, plasma is one of the best open source projects i ever seen... and im really thankful for all the hard work you and the plasma developers are doing, oxygen is also very cool and i love both... i cant wait for kde 4.0 personally :) i been using kde4 svn since some days ago on slackware and is really an incredible piece of work... i hope your soul will stay happy and don't listen to the trolls, we are pretty much happy with all what you and the KDE team do :)

I wouldn't sweat it, I cannot run kde 4 beta 3 all that well, but, par for the course, allmost ANY large software beta
has problems. look at distro's themselves. I can never run a pre-release distro without showstoppers, and that is mostly mature software packages.

Looking forward to seeing KDE 4.0 sitting on my desktop from my preferred distro soon!

I don't think it's a moot point; what about users of KDE who desperately want to use Konqueror for their general web browsing, but are unable to do so on some sites just because the Konqueror developers "don't like" Webkit despite no evident technical argument against it?

Hi, I just want to say a BIG thanks to all of you guys working on KDE. Its THE BEST desktop out there (at least seems to me like that :-) ). And I am soooo excited about KDE 4. You are doing a WONDERFUL job.

Hi Aaron - glad I could cheer you up. There are lots of us working on KDE 4 stuff as and when we can. Now I am settling in at my new apartment in the US I should be able to get some more done. Sorry I am going to miss the launch event in January - stuck out in the middle of the Red Sea on a dive boat that week ;-)

You are doing some great work, may be use that shift key a little more but otherwise things are looking good. I will certainly be doing what I can to ensure that KDE 4 is a great release.

Talking about panel... are KDE4 panels separate window-like frames or is this more like an arrangement rule for plasmoids?

Bye

what makes it a moot point is that with a kpart for both khtml and webkit, you can pick which you'd like to use. and whichever one does a better job of that is what OSVs will ship with their default installs.

so ... the market will decide in the end.

Can users choose what HTML part embedders like KHelpCenter and KMail use? I think they implement a view that inherits from class KHTMLPart which is part of the KHTML source code. So switching to KQtWebKitPart would be a compile-time choice unless someone does some re-engineering in KDE to add run-time indirection.

(Not that I care, I'm a VIC-20 BASIC user myself.)

First of all, let me apologize for being one of those blog posts. I don't want to be guilty of the greatest crime known to man: aseigocide.

My post was not meant to say that Plasma sucked, or that Plasma didn't deserve loving (in fact, it needs lots and lots of loving). My points were:

1. To express what the regular users that I run into in #kde and #kubuntu think when they try out KDE 4.0 Betas. I mean, user feedback is needed right?

2. To emphasize how important, in fact necessary, Plasma is to KDE 4's functionality and image.

3. To try and make users aware that uninformed rantings have adverse effects on developers (as proven by you).

4. To hold off final judgement on Plasma for now.

I am a big Plasma (and KWin effects :P) fan and believer. This is one part of KDE 4 that I've been waiting for since the day I heard about KDE 4. I even put off learning to do Superkaramba themes because I believe in Plasma being the future. That's why I look at it probably more critically than any other part of KDE 4.

Again, I'm sorry for the attempted aseigocide. Hope you get your motivation and passion for working on Plasma up again.

Hey Aaron,
Every time I read a negative comment I usually stew a little bit and curse a little bit under my breath. But now that will change! I need to offset some of those negative comments...

KDE4 is going to be great! Plasma is going to be amazing and I'm already being surprised by the potential it holds. I remember at aKademy '06 it all seemed so far away and now it's being something more concrete day by day. Really looking forward to it, keep up the good work and the chin too :D
