watch out wesnoth, here comes p.

so p. has decided he's going to grow up and write computer games. he made this decision several months ago almost immediately upon learning how games are made. in the meantime he's become a huge wesnoth fan, and he's becoming disturbingly good at it.

the other day he pointed out to me that having to use the mouse to open the menu isn't so hot and that he should be able to press a key combination (he suggest ctrl-alt-m; obviously an emacs user at heart already. eek.) and it should pop up in the middle of the screen where he can then use the keyboard to select what he wants from it.

he also informed me that he intends on joining the wesnoth project when he is older to help them develop wesnoth 2. he has set also a date of 2020 for its release; i kid you not.

sometimes i just sit here shaking my head in awe and wonder as he shares his thoughts and ideas, reflections of the outside world cast by the mirrors inside his mind.

Sorta spooky to see yourself as you were years ago isn't it?
He is so much like you I'm almost wondering if you didn't just have a cloning project going on in your closet that you didn't tell us about! hahahaha....

Fun story!

My wife's iBook died a couple of months ago and we couldn't afford another Mac, so I bought her a cheap dual-core laptop and put Gentoo on it. Things worked out okay -- there are some things she misses about her Mac, but she actually likes DigiKam BETTER than iPhoto and has made the switch to kmail pretty seamlessly.

A couple days ago, I get home work and she is very excited. She wants to show me something. She didn't like any of the "web gallery" templates available in the htmlexport kipi plugin, so she figured out where stuff was and started hacking on the XSL template for the frames theme. By the time I got home from work, she had a whole new template ready to go -- she just didn't know how to "compile" it into HTML format. I showed her xsltproc and off she went. She's not a programmer or anything -- just a very logical thinker. I think her theme looks very nice.

She is very proud that her new template has more than 120 downloads from the www.kde-*.org web sites. She's spent the last week or so doing almost nothing but play with XML and CSS -- she's completely captivated.

This is one of the great things about Open Source -- it's so easy to get involved, anyone can feel like they're a part of it. I hope your your son continues to be interested in Linux (and especially in game programming, where there is a huge need right now). I'm looking forward to his many contributions.

@jaye: yeah, it is spooky, but in a good way. and stop looking in my closet! ;)

@robert: "it's so easy to get involved, anyone can feel like they're a part of it."

that is a very cool story, and i completely agree with your conclusion above.

btw, would you mind if i were to use this anecdote in some of my presentations in the future? not 100% sure if i'll use it, but it certainly is the sort of story i look for.
