irony

irony is theo de raadt lecturing others on how not to "come off as as being mean".

wow. the more of theo's emails I read, the more he comes off as a complete and utter jerk. I mean, wtf? was he *encouraging* marcus to just give up because of one mistake? when people were offering to relicense their code for him?
/me shakes head...

Yeah, I love how he goes on and on about how the bcm43xx guy was wrong for complaining about (what appears to be a fairly large) violation of their copyright on the mailing list without first contacting the guy in private because it brings about a bit of public humiliation, and yet totally fails to grok the fact that he is surely compounding any public humiliation hugely by having blown this up to the point where it is now splashed across all the geek sites.

Sheesh, I think the poor dude that did the infringing (well, as poor as you can be when you get caught ripping off code), got in about one email in the entire thread. With Theo appointing himself as your mouthpiece, who needs enemies (or, at least, if you don't have any, you will shortly)!

How ironic is Theo, the guys that most certainly go vocal about any issue...

For awhile I thought I was reading something toddlers would right. Especially after the "I'm wrong and I'll never code again attitude."

Well... This is not the first time TdR goes postal isn't it ? I think it's interesting to see how he can shout so loud. I am hearing him from Switzerland ! :)

Bah... Doesn't matter.

It might be the whole Dutch bluntness thing, but I see not much wrong with it. To be honest, I find your blog about it more offensive than Theo's email. What is this thing about crusifying another developer? I thought you had more than enough to offer the community without displaying such immature behaviour? In my view, you are behaving at least as offensive as you think Theo is.

If you think he is encouraging Marcus to quit, read again. It is NOT what he is saying.

oh, i'm not crucifying him. he did that all by himself.

here's one of the most important lessons one can learn in being part of a community, doubly so if you are leading one: everything we say and do in public is on display for those in our community. our actions reverberate around the people closest to us. we need to be really comfortable with who we are and what we do, foibles included. that means that mirrors held up to one's self should not be shocking.

theo's attitude (use whatever adjectives you wish to describe it) is a real drag on the communities he touches. whether his approach, attitude and positions are defensible or not, they have a deleterious effect.

personally, i think this particular exchange is pretty funny and riddled with unintended irony. in the OSS community we tend to observe inwardly on such things, and that's a good thing. it's how community and culture evolve.

that some people may be upset about such observation of a public display of behaviour in our own community says to me that they they are missing some fundamental concepts that hold this thing together.

did i say that? =) i'm positive that Theo didn't want this outcome. sadly, he was unable to find a way to avoid it. this speaks volumes to his leadership and personal skills. the term that leaps to mind is "self destructive behaviour".

nobody wanted the outcome that occurred. everyone wanted the other possibility (continued development, dual licensing) and yet somehow ... that group of people couldn't make that one hope they all shared in common come true.

amazing. and sad. i'm sure Theo, and everyone else, is very upset over it, and rightfully so. what i wonder is if he understands -why- it went the way it did. i really don't think he is able to perceive his own role in it. he's certainly not the lone actor in this, but he had the opportunity as a leader to pull it together and didn't.

actually, Theo is a Canadian who just happens to have a Dutch last name. his parents are from South Africa, but Theo lives in the same city i do. we even frequent some of the same pubs in town.

Well, I read the whole thread just now and I have to say that we have here two excellent examples of how not handle such issues.

1) Michel was wrong making such public fuzz about an incident that could have easily been solved with a private email, even if it was a stern one.
2) Theo was just his usual ballistic self.

Both have set excellent examples of being unable to cope with peculiar situations in a reasonable manner.

Its a real pity that our trade has so many of them...
