the eagle-eyed may notice that there is no bookmarks menu in that screenshot. that's because i have a patch which i forgot to commit before the freeze that makes that configurable. i really wish i had remembered, because that extra button is used by very very few people and takes up unecessary space, memory and CPU cycles on file dialog creation (though admittedly not all that many). a patch that makes the bookmarks button optional (it's in the configure menu, doesn't add new strings) as well as makes the file dialog save its config even if the Cancel button is pressed (i personally count the latter item to be a bug) can be had here:

Looks great, but maybe it needs some kind of frame around the speedbar (like in Kontact)? Especially if the vertical scrollbar is visible, this would look much better (IMO).
BTW, I liked your CVS comment (goodbye 1995, hello 1998!) ;)
I like it. But the bar seems kinda wide; could it be made to take up less room?
